Answer

A review of the current Race Relations (Northern Ireland) Order 1997 has been conducted as part of the Racial Equality Strategy 2015 - 2025, including a 12-week public consultation on possible changes which concluded in June 2023.

A report on the responses and feedback from the consultation is currently under consideration. We aim to bring updated Race Relations legislation before the Assembly through the legislative programme in the 2025-2026 Session and intend to publish the report in advance of that. The report will inform the basis for any legislative changes and will move us a step closer to providing the best possible legal protection against racism and towards a more equal society.
