Pursuant to my response to AQW 6324 we have seen significant progress on implementation of the Cancer Strategy:

This includes:

The development of Rapid Diagnosis Centres (RDCs) forming the basis for faster diagnosis pathways for people with cancer.

Work on redesign proposals for haematological cancer pathways for the 3 main blood cancers (Myeloma, Lymphoma and Acute Leukaemia) has been completed. This work will help to transform the delivery of these services.

A capacity and demand model on Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (primarily chemotherapy) has been completed and will be used to support the planning of Systemic Anti-Cancer Services.

Work is currently underway to review the delivery of breast services in Northern Ireland. An initial workshop with Trust medical staff and management was held on 12 March, with further engagement with charities and service users planned in coming weeks.

A cancer research strategy for Northern Ireland is being developed. It is hoped that a draft strategy will be circulated for consultation by summer 2024.

A review of cancer support services for Adolescents and Young Adults (AYA) has been completed, with work underway to develop regional minimum standards for this service.

A mental health advisory group has also been established to find ways of meeting the mental health and wellbeing needs of those living with cancer and their immediate family.

Work to implement an optimal care pathway for pancreatic cancer is underway.
