Answer

I can advise that this developer-led junction improvement scheme, which is being carried out in conjunction with a housing development in the Mealough Road area, has entered its final phase with resurfacing of the main A24 Saintfield Road commencing over the weekend of the 5th/6th March 2022.

The final resurfacing, had originally been scheduled for Sunday the 13th March 2022 but had to be postponed due to poor weather conditions, commenced on Sunday the 20th March and is currently expected to be completed by the end of April 2022, after which the new traffic signal layout will commissioned.

This junction improvement scheme replaces the old staggered junction with a crossroads layout, and provides a right turn lane into both Mealough Road and Manse Road, together with improved pedestrian facilities.

Unfortunately it has taken much longer to complete this scheme than was originally envisaged due, primarily, to the discovery of unforeseen poor ground conditions on the Mealough Road, which necessitated the redesign of a replacement culvert.

The scheme will be of significant benefit to all road users and will enhance overall safety at the junction and along the A24 Saintfield Road corridor.
