Answer
As Minister, I have been keen to ensure that sustainable and active travel are both given priority in the work of my Department. Last year, I published the Belfast Cycling Network 2021, which highlights a number of routes in south Belfast and the whole of the city, with estimated investment of over £100 million over the next ten years.
I expect to publish a delivery plan for the Belfast Cycling Network shortly which will give more detail on the implementation of connected and safe cycling routes for everyday cycling in the city.
Construction of the new Belfast Transport Hub is also under way and this will be served by the Belfast Cycle Network. This will facilitate those wanting to make multimodal journeys by walking, cycling, wheeling and public transport.
Part of the consideration of BRT2 would be improvements in facilities to maximise integration with all forms of active travel including cycling. This may include secure cycle shelters at strategic points along the route (e.g Park & Ride sites).
