Answer

There are many testing sites in place across Northern Ireland, operating as part of the National Testing Programme. All test sites operate a booking system whereby anyone needing a test can book a particular slot to avoid queueing or waiting any length of time. Each test site follows the appropriate clinical standard operating procedure to ensure the safety of each test site. Where a vulnerable person cannot attend a test site, a home test kit can be ordered.

If a person is unable to attend for an appointment due to issues relating to their physical or mental wellbeing, a referral can be made to the local HSC Trust’s Community Screening Team, who may carry out testing within the home environment. All referrals are assessed based on clinical need.

Advice for people who were identified as being ‘clinically extremely vulnerable’ is kept under continual review. The requirement to shield has been paused since the end of July 2020. The evidence available, together with new treatments and preventative measures, means it is unlikely that shielding will be required again in the future.
